Amtmannsnes Rock carvings is a historical landmark located in Alta, known for its unique cave paintings. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and represents one of five cave painting sites in the region. The recorded figures, which are believed to date to Phase 3, approximately 5000 years ago, stand out from other cave art in Norway. In total, between 500 and 600 figures have been recorded at the site.
The discovery of these figures occurred in 1977, when local residents first noticed them. The rock surfaces are heavily eroded, which has made documentation of the artwork challenging. Amtmannsnes is located on a low peninsula by the Altafjord, at an altitude of 14-17 meters above sea level, thus providing a unique context for the historical artworks found there.
