The Institute of Marine Research is the largest marine research institute in Europe, and its main task is to research, advise on and monitor marine resources. The institute has developed long-term monitoring plans for the marine environment, with a particular focus on endangered skate species in the Norwegian Sea. Through innovative use of technology, such as echo sounders, the institute contributes to advancing knowledge about the state of the ocean and its resources.
In addition to research, the Institute of Marine Research collaborates with over 40 municipalities to safeguard the lobster population through conservation schemes. The institute is celebrating its 125th anniversary, and is marking this with a focus on future goals in marine research. It also offers doctoral degrees and research programs, and has several research stations along the Norwegian coast to support its work.
