Hellen Fortress is a historical landmark in Bergen, built as part of the coastal artillery fortifications in the late 1890s. The original structure consisted of Kvarven Fort, Hellen Fort and Sandviken Battery. During World War I, the fortress was expanded with minefields and additional fortifications to strengthen its military capacity.
During the invasion of Norway in 1940, Kvarven Fort scored hits on German ships, which underlines the fortress's strategic importance in wartime. During the German occupation, the fortifications were further expanded. Today, Hellen Fortress functions as a war memorial and open-air recreation area, with Kvarven Fort partially protected as an important military historical monument.
