Maria Krypten is a museum located on Øvregaten, known as Norway's oldest street, in the historic core of Bergen. The museum has a ceramics workshop with a focus on sculptures and has been an important part of the art community since it opened its gallery in 1991. Since 1995, Maria Krypten has been showing exhibitions of her own work, and has earned a reputation for her sculptural candlesticks, often referred to as "baroque candlesticks".
The workshop, which was established in 1878, has been preserved in its original form and gives visitors an insight into traditional ceramic techniques. The artists at Maria Krypten work with ceramics, large drawings and silkscreens, drawing inspiration from both antiquity and the baroque, while adding a modern expression to their works. The museum thus offers a unique combination of historical craftsmanship and contemporary art.
