Bergens Skipperforening was founded on 22 August 1867 and aims to bring together sea captains in the Bergen area. The association is non-partisan and has nearly 250 members. Members must hold a sea captain's certificate to be admitted. In its early years, the association served as an important consultation body for political proposals related to shipping, and has throughout its history collaborated with other maritime organizations, such as Bergens Rederiforening.
The association focuses on developing and maintaining contact between maritime colleagues, as well as promoting professional and updated general information. It arranges various activities, including the celebration of 8 May to honor war sailors. In addition, Bergens Skipperforening offers banquet facilities for events, and has been based at Småstrandgaten 8 in the center of Bergen since 1897.
