Gamle Fredrikstad Mekaniske Verksted has a significant historical role in Fredrikstad and Norwegian shipping. Established in 1870, the first boat was completed in 1873, and until 1987 a total of 443 boats were built at the shipyard. This long tradition has contributed to the development of maritime industries in the region.
The area around the shipyard is being developed to become a vibrant part of Fredrikstad city center, with a focus on housing, business, experience and leisure. The goal is to preserve the historical heritage while creating new jobs. With a plot of 400 acres, there is potential for further development and adaptation to modern needs.
