Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning has its main focus on the decommissioning of nuclear research facilities in Norway, with particular responsibility for the operation of the nuclear facility in Halden. The organization works with three main tasks: operation, decommissioning and storage of radioactive waste. This also includes the construction of storage and landfill for radioactive waste, as well as the management of such waste from industry.
In addition to its national tasks, Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning participates in international cooperation on waste management. The organization emphasizes sustainability and the environment, and works to ensure transparency and involvement of civil society in the processes that deal with decommissioning and waste management. Concept studies for the disposal of radioactive waste are also prepared, which is an important part of their long-term plans.
