Tollboden is a historic building from 1830, originally built as a customs house. The building was designed by architect Frederich Christopher Gedde and is an example of the Empire style, characterized by its characteristic design with five window axes. In 1842, the building was expanded to meet the needs of shipping, which has been an important part of Halden's maritime traditions.
Located between Halden Torg and the guest harbor, Tollboden has a central location in the city. The building's packing sheds have historically been used to store customs goods, and it has thus played a significant role in the development of the city's commercial life. In addition, Tollboden is located near several cultural and historical sites, making it part of a larger historical landscape in Halden.
