đ Tromsø: apartments and hytter â how to check internet and logistics
Winter Tromsø is the perfect place to âwork during the day and breathe in the north in the evening.â To ensure that your week or month goes smoothly, focus on two things: the actual internet speed in your apartment/cabin and logistics without a car â bus routes, proximity to the waterfront and âeveningâ trails.
đĄ How to confirm the actual Wi-Fi speed before booking? [Lock: Tromsø]
- Ask about the type of connection. The ideal is fibre (Altibox/Signal): the local provider Signal offers gigabit Altibox tariffs in Tromsø and Finnmark; this is more stable than DSL or a 4G router. Ask for a photo/screenshot of the contract or the name of the tariff.
- Ask for a screenshot of the measurement during ârush hourâ (7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.) from the apartment: down/up + ping/jitter. Speedtest/fast.com will work. If the owner connects a laptop via Ethernet, the result will be closer to the actual channel speed. (In the city, you can usually get hundreds of megabits and above if it's fibre.)
- Check the network in the house. Router model, is there mesh in the rooms; ask if you can sit next to the access point or connect via cable.
- Check plan B. An eSIM from an operator that roams on Telenor/Telia will give you 4G backup in the city centre.
- After moving in â quick check. Measure again during ârush hourâ. If gigabit is advertised, but you see âmobileâ 20â30 Mbit/s â write to the landlord and ask for a solution (restart ONT/router, cable at the workplace, etc.).
đ Which areas are convenient without a car in winter? [Winter]
- Sentrum / GrønnegataâStorgata. Everything is within walking distance, frequent Svipper buses around the city, a couple of minutes to the library. The most ârisk-freeâ corridor for a month.
- Tromsdalen (near the bridge). Quick access to the centre, close to the lower station of the Fjellheisen cable car â convenient for âevening viewsâ without a car. Bus 26 goes to the âFjellheisenâ stop.
- UiT/UNN (Breivika). If your work is related to the campus/hospital, this is a good area with frequent services; to the centre â on the main lines (40/42, etc.).
- South of the island (Telegrafbukta/museum). Close to the park by the water; buses 33 and 40 go here â convenient for living and quick access to the sea.
Useful: tickets and timetables for the area are available in the app/on the website Svipper (formerly Troms fylkestrafikk); there are 7- and 30-day passes and off-peak fares on weekdays after 5 p.m.
đ Where are the nearest evening trails/viewpoints?
- Fjellheisen â Storsteinen. The cable car runs daily from 09:00 to 00:00, and at the top there is a platform with a view of the lights of the bridge and the cathedral. Perfect for a quick break after a day of colling.
- Telegrafbukta. The beach and dark edge on the south of the island are a popular âurbanâ spot for auroras; it is about 3â4 km on foot from the centre, and bus 33 goes directly to the park, while bus 40 goes to the Tromsø Museum.
- Prestvannet. The circle around the lake on the hill has fewer lights and is often frozen in winter; it is easy to reach from the centre. (Locals often catch the aurora here on clear nights.)
- Lysløypa (illuminated trail on Tromsøya). A network of âlightedâ trails from Charlottenlund to Prestvannet â for walking/running on snowshoes and skis. Good for regular 45â90 minute evening sessions.
Quiet work nearby: the main library in the centre (Grønnegata 94) is open MonâThu 09:00â19:00, Fri 09:00â16:00, closed 11:00â15:30, and the merĂĽpent format gives self-service access from 07:00 to 22:00 with a card â convenient for âearlyâ and âlateâ slots.
The formula for a reliable month is simple: optics from Signal/Altibox + screen measurement at rush hour before booking, areas along busy bus routes (city centre, Tromsdalen, south of the island, campus) and evening spots nearby â Fjellheisen, Telegrafbukta, Prestvannet or a section of Lysløypa. This ensures that working days go smoothly, and the window after 6:00 p.m. invariably delights with northern light â both literally and figuratively.
