🌱 Green energy: entry points in wind, hydro, CCS and batteries
Want to move into climate tech and energy ‘here,’ but don't know where to start? This guide contains verified platforms, entry-level positions, key skills, hot regions and internship routes. At the end, there is a quick checklist for the first few weeks.
🔎 Where to look for jobs in green energy?
Start with national boards: FINN Jobb (wide range of wind/hydro/data) and Arbeidsplassen/NAV (many infrastructure and energy roles). For startups and product teams, try The Hub and Startuplab Jobs (filters by city and format). Check out the career sections of relevant clusters and companies: Norwegian Offshore Wind, GCE Ocean Technology (Bergen), Maritime CleanTech (Stord/Stavanger/Bergen), as well as Statkraft, Statnett, Equinor, Northern Lights (CCS), Aker Carbon Capture, Morrow Batteries, Hydrovolt. Subscribe to cluster alerts and newsletters.
🧑💻 What entry-level positions are available in green energy?
For junior–mid level positions, roles at the intersection of IT and engineering are more common: data/energy analyst, BI/SCADA support, GIS/geodata, QA/battery production operator, process/simulation engineer (CCS), IoT/network sensor implementation, HSE/procurement coordinator. Examples: production positions and technical support at Morrow (batteries, Arendal), engineering vacancies at Aker Carbon Capture (dynamic simulations, amine purification), Statnett regularly seeks developers/GIS in power systems, and climate startups such as Spoor hire developers/ML for wind farms. These roles often allow English and hybrid.
📚 What skills and qualifications are needed to work in green energy?
Base for ‘numbers in energy’: Python/SQL, basics of energy systems (balance, network losses), GIS, understanding of SCADA/OPC UA, clouds (Azure/AWS). For offshore wind: GWO Basic Safety Training certificates are valued (height, fire safety, etc.; valid for 2 years, providers available in the country). For electrical engineers, FSE courses on electrical safety are mandatory. For CCS, the following are a plus on your CV: dynamic modelling, process engineering, experience with CO₂ capture/transport. In the ‘digital network,’ cases with IoT sensors and streaming data, such as those at Heimdall Power, will be helpful.
🗺️ Which regions have the most jobs in green energy?
— West Coast (Rogaland/Haugastøl-Haugesund/Bergen/Stord): offshore wind and ocean tech; a competition is underway for Utsira Nord (announced on 19 May 2025) and there is a large network of suppliers, Norwegian Offshore Wind; Bergen has an active cluster of GCE Ocean Technology and marine ecosystems.
- Capital region (Oslo/Fornebu/Høvik): consulting and certification (DNV), digitalisation of energy and the Energy Valley ecosystem.
- ‘Technology Capital’ (Trondheim): R&D/data/energy based at NTNU/SINTEF.
- South (Agder, Arendal): Morrow Batteries (manufacturing/engineering).
- East (Østfold, Fredrikstad): Hydrovolt — one of the largest battery recycling plants in Europe.
- Møre og Romsdal (Alesund): GCE Blue Maritime — shipbuilding and marine electrification.
🎓 How to find an internship in green energy?
Check out seasonal programmes at industry ‘anchors’. Equinor is accepting applications for summer internships in 2026 from 16 September to 19 October 2025 — a good entry point into offshore wind/low-carbon projects. Statkraft (hydro/renewables) and Statnett (grid/system operator) publish summer positions and tracks for students/graduates every year. In marine technology, GCE Ocean Technology's Recruit a student is useful for direct contact between students and companies. Additionally, keep an eye on the FINN/NAV boards, where summer internships are often posted.
🏢 Which startups and large companies are involved in green energy?
- Wind/offshore: the Norwegian Offshore Wind ecosystem (≈400+ participants); Startup Spoor — AI monitoring of birds at wind farms.
- Hydro/renewables and grid: Statkraft (Europe's largest renewable energy producer), Statnett (grid operator), Heimdall Power (IoT sensors and software for grids).
- CCS: industrial project Longship with capture at the cement plant Brevik CCS (officially opened on 18 June 2025) and transport/storage via Northern Lights; engineering roles at Aker Carbon Capture.
- Batteries and circular economy: Morrow Batteries (manufacturing, Arendal), Hydrovolt (battery recycling, Fredrikstad).
🚀 Fast track (2–3 weeks)
- Set alerts on FINN/NAV, add The Hub and Startuplab Jobs.
- Subscribe to the Norwegian Offshore Wind newsletter and the GCE Ocean calendar (e.g. Arendalsuka, 14 August 2025).
- Planning offshore wind? Check out GWO BST (valid for 2 years) and upcoming dates with providers. Electrical engineers — update FSE.
- For internships: check the Equinor box (16 September–19 October 2025), check Statkraft/Statnett and Recruit a student at GCE Ocean.
The green energy market in the land of fjords offers hundreds of roles, from data and networks to batteries and CCS.
Keep a balance: apply to anchor companies and climate start-ups at the same time, showing your portfolio with real cases. Keep an eye on internship windows and cluster events — this will help you get into the community faster and catch your first offer chain.
