🌃🚋 Bergen night transport: how to get home safely
In the ‘city of seven hills,’ late-night travel is affected by rain, the terrain, and the Bybanen schedule with night buses. Below, you'll find where to look for schedules, how to understand the night lines, which areas they serve, what to do if you miss the last bus, and how to get home safely and dry.
🌧️⛰️ Context — rain, terrain, Bybanen and night lines
Local transport operator Skyss has a single trip planner and PDF timetables for the city and region (buses, Bybanen, boats). For late hours, the most convenient option is the planner in the app/on the website + the section with traffic deviations (‘Avvik’). There you will also find maps of zones and terminals.
🗺️ Night transport: how to find your way around
- Bybanen (Line 1 Centre—Airport, Line 2 Centre—Fyllingsdalen). There are night services on weekends. For example, on the night from Friday to Saturday, Line 1 runs every 15 minutes: from Byparken until ~04:00, and from the airport until ~03:11. On the night from Sunday to Monday, services are shorter, from the centre until ~01:00. See the current PDF ‘Linje 1’.
- Night buses (‘nattavgangar’). At night on weekends, fan-shaped routes depart from the centre to the suburbs (Askøy/Øygarden, Nordhordland, etc.). They are marked as Natt in the timetables and often start from Lars Hilles gate/Bergen busstasjon.
🚌 Night buses: route structure (overview)
- Where to depart. Most night buses pick up passengers in the city centre: Lars Hilles gate, Festplassen/Torget-Bryggen, Bergen busstasjon — the exact location depends on the destination. Check the specific PDF for your line or plan your route using the planner.
- Where they go. Typical destinations are west (Øygarden/Askøy), north (Åsane/Nordhordland), south (Fana/Ytrebygda). Some lines have night ‘branches’ to residential areas — this is shown in the ‘Nattavgangar’ table.
- When they run. As a rule, on Saturday night and Sunday night; on public holidays (e.g. 17 May), special night services are added. Always check during the week of your trip.
⏰ Last/early services: how to plan shifts and evening activities
- Bybanen Line 1 (Centre→Airport). On Friday evening/night from Byparken — night departures every 15 minutes from 01:15 to 04:00.
- Bybanen Line 1 (Airport→Centre). On the same night — until 03:11 from Bergen lufthavn (then arriving at the centre).
- Monday night. Late on Sunday evening, Line 1 runs until ~01:00 from Byparken (last block 20:45–01:00 every 15 minutes).
- Night buses. Fixed departures along routes from the centre (e.g. after 02:30–04:10 towards Øygarden/Askøy). Check the PDF for your line before departure.
- If schedules change (repairs/detours). Keep an eye on the Service messages/Avvik section, where changes and cancellations to night services are posted promptly.
🛡️ Safety and comfort — rain, waiting, ‘when will the taxi arrive?’
- Where to wait. Choose well-lit stops/terminals (Byparken, Bergen busstasjon). It is convenient to open the platform map in advance (PDF terminal).
- Minimum rain gear. A light membrane jacket, a backpack cover, spare socks — and your phone in a waterproof case.
- Plan B. If your night flight has been cancelled and there are no alternatives, Skyss offers a Reisegaranti (Travel guarantee): you can keep your receipt and claim compensation for a taxi/other transport. Terms and conditions and forms are available on the Skyss website.
- When a taxi/carpool is more appropriate. Long waits in heavy rain, a late route ‘uphill’ when you're alone, or when the night bus doesn't go to your neighbourhood (shortened night service). Check the planner again before you leave.
🌧️ Rain kit in your backpack
- Light membrane jacket
- Backpack cover
- Spare socks
- Mini umbrella
- Touchscreen gloves
📱 Plan B
- Save links: Skyss Reise planner, Bergen bus station map, Avvik page
- Local taxi phone number
- Address of nearby hostel/hotel to shelter & call a cab
📝 Mini checklist (quick route)
- Check the PDF for Bybanen/your night line for the evening of your trip.
- Check Avvik: are there any cancellations/detours tonight?
- Designate a waiting point: Byparken or Bergen busstasjon (lighting/shelters).
- Have a plan B: taxi + Reisegaranti (if cancelled and there are no alternatives, keep the receipt).
- Rain gear in the top pocket of your backpack, phone in a case.
Night buses and Bybanen cover the main routes on weekends, but the key is to check the schedule and ‘Avvik’ before leaving, choose a well-lit waiting point and have a ‘plan B’ ready. Then, even in the rain, your late journey home will be predictable.
FAQ
Night lines from the centre branch out to different areas on weekend nights; take well-lit hubs (Byparken/Busstasjon), keep an eye out for ‘Avvik’ and have a plan B.
Towards Øygarden/Askøy, Nordhordland, southern residential areas, etc. See the PDF Nattavgangar for your destination.
Check for alternatives in the app, then take a taxi. If the cancellation was the fault of the carrier and there were no alternatives, keep your receipt and apply for compensation via Reisegaranti.
Plan a short transfer in the planner, wait at a covered/well-lit hub; keep a ‘rain kit’ and power bank with you, and wear non-slip shoes on routes with slopes.
