⛴️ Budø: gateway to Lofoten, logistics after 6 p.m.

The working day is over — and you can still make it to Lofoten in the evening. Everything is close by: the port and airport are within the city limits, there is a library with views just a stone's throw from the piers, and there are convenient evening departures. Below is a short but comprehensive guide: what options are available after 6 p.m., where to sit and work by the water or at the terminal, and what to do with your luggage if you have suitcases.

🚢 How to get to Lofoten after work?

1) NEX2 express boat (passenger) to Svolvær. Usually departs at 18:00 Mon–Sat, at 19:00 Sun; journey time ~3 hours 25 minutes. Tickets for flights from Bodo are best purchased in advance (advance purchase/booking required for departures ‘from Bodo’). Departure point — Sentrumsterminalen in the centre.

2) Bodø–Moskenes ferry (for pedestrians and cars). During the season, there are evening departures (e.g., around 18:45; schedule varies by date). The journey takes 3–4 hours. Pedestrians travel at current rates for 0 NOK, cars are subject to a fee; reservations for cars are highly recommended. For timetables and changes, contact the operator Torghatten Nord/Entur.

3) By plane. Widerøe has frequent short flights from Bodø to Leknes (LKN) and Svolvær (SVJ); the last pair usually leaves between ~20:25–22:55 depending on the day. The flight takes 25–35 minutes. Check the current slots in the fare calendar.

Tip: if you are travelling by boat, arrive in advance and check the board at Reis Nordland; if you are flying, allow 5–10 minutes by taxi/on foot from the centre to the airport.

💻 Where can you work for a couple of hours near the port/airport?

Near the port. The ideal ‘quiet harbour’ is Stormen bibliotek by the water: reading areas, power sockets, stable Wi-Fi. In summer 2025, it will be open until 6 p.m. on Tuesdays to Thursdays (shorter hours on other days; open on Sundays during the day). In the same complex, there is Påpir (Library Bar) if you need coffee and a table. From here, it is a 5–7 minute walk to the express ferry.

At the airport. There are several cafés in the terminal (e.g. Herfra, Narvesen) and free Wi-Fi for 4 hours from Avinor — enough to check your emails/make a phone call. See the airport website for specific opening hours.

The port waiting rooms in Bodø are warm, with seats and toilets (for the express boat, there is a separate room at Downtown/Sentrumsterminalen). It is best not to count on electricity/internet in the hall itself — bring a power bank.

🎒 Are there any luggage lockers for overnight storage?

Yes, there are two convenient options within walking distance:

  • Bodø railway station — Speed Locker machines inside the station: 60–80 NOK/24 hours, storage for up to 7 days. Convenient if you have an evening boat/ferry and want to go out for a meal or work in the library.
  • Bodø Airport (Avinor) — paid luggage storage with baggage inspection (from 100 NOK, price depends on size). Useful if you are transferring between an evening arrival and a morning departure to Lofoten.

Life hack: if you are staying near the port, many hotels offer free left-luggage storage for guests — ask at the reception desk.

After six o'clock, you can dive straight into the archipelago: take an express boat to Svolvær, a ferry to Moskenes or a short flight to Leknes/Svolvær. For a couple of hours of work, keep in mind the combination of Stormen bibliotek → Sentrumsterminalen by the water or a café and Wi-Fi at the airport; you can leave your luggage at the station or at the Avinor terminal.

I am 32, and every day I fall in love with Norway anew – a country where fog glides across the fjords as casually as conversations in a village café. My school…
