Packraft + hike: how to put together your dream water and mountain route
Just picture it: you're strolling along a beautiful mountain trail, and then, all of a sudden, you unfold your compact packraft and glide down a crystal-clear lake or rushing river, enjoying the freedom to move through Norway's stunning national parks. If you're looking for a way to really get to know the hidden corners of Norway, then I would definitely recommend combining hiking with pacrafting. It's such an exciting way to experience the beauty of the outdoors!
Why is Jotunheimen National Park perfect for pacrafing and hiking?
Jotunheimen is a place like no other, where you can enjoy both accessible mountain trails and numerous lakes that are just perfect for packrafting. The classic route starts at Lake Jende, where you can climb the legendary Besseggen ridge and then descend by packraft back to the starting point. As you go, you'll be treated to some truly breathtaking mountain panoramas, and you'll feel completely one with nature.
Which regions of Norway are particularly good for kayaking and packrafting in the fjords?
I would absolutely love to tell you that Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord are ideal for combined routes! Their waters are so calm and their shores so picturesque, with handy places to stop for the night, that you can travel in comfort while enjoying views of waterfalls, lovely gardens and charming villages. Hey, why not? This is a great chance to see Norway in a whole new way and have an amazing outdoor adventure.
Which cycling and hiking routes are best to combine with packrafting?
Why not try the fabled Rallarvegen in the Hardangervidda area or the routes around the Lofoten Islands? And if you're feeling really adventurous, why not try rafting on one of our beautiful local rivers or lakes? Hey, just a friendly reminder to plan your transition points between water and land in advance, use GPX files and check the weather forecast to make sure you've got an unforgettable multi-sport experience. 😊
And which glacial lakes are suitable for safe packrafting?
If you're into packrafting, you'll love the lakes at the foot of glaciers like Brixdal and Nigardsbreen. The waters there are so clean and calm, it's just perfect for packrafting. But, my dear, don't forget to stay safe: always check the weather forecast, stay far away from ice walls and wear a life jacket. Glacier water is cold even in summer, so it's a good idea to plan your equipment and route in advance.
I'd love to know which campsites are the most convenient for combined routes, if you know?
If you're planning an overnight stay on a combined route, then I would wholeheartedly recommend the Gjendesheim campsite in Jotunheimen and the Ramberg Gjestegård in Lofoten. You'll find yourself in no need to worry about finding a place to pitch your tent, and the closeness to the water means that you can easily switch from hiking to water activities. And don't forget about the Allemannsretten, which lets you camp pretty much anywhere except on private land.
What is Allemannsretten and how does it work when spending the night on islands?
Allmennretten is a really special Norwegian right of access to nature. It's great because it lets you pitch a tent on islands and lake shores almost everywhere, as long as you're at least 150 metres away from private property. We all love our National Parks, and we want to keep them beautiful and special for everyone. So, when you're out enjoying them, please remember to follow the 'leave no trace' principle. This means taking all your rubbish with you and doing your best not to harm the local flora and fauna.
What animals are most commonly encountered on combined routes?
When you're out and about in the national parks, you might spot some reindeer, moose, and even foxes or arctic foxes. I just love meeting seabirds on the lakes and fjords – it's such a treat! Just remember to keep a safe distance so that you and the animals can both feel comfortable.
How can I minimise the weight of my packrafting and hiking gear?
When you're choosing your packrafts, go for ones that are lightweight and compact (less than 3 kg) and that you can fold up. We recommend using ultralight tents and sleeping bags weighing up to 1 kg, so you can enjoy your trip without any extra weight! Why not swap your old cookware for some titanium, and take a lightweight gas cylinder with you? Hey, just a friendly reminder that your backpack shouldn't weigh more than 10 kg. That way, you'll be able to move around easily and quickly, so you can enjoy your trip to the max!
I would really recommend checking out a combined packrafting and hiking route, because it will show you a unique side to Norway's national parks that you just wouldn't get to see as a regular tourist. Pick your perfect route, and enjoy the freedom to move and the amazing views.
