🏞️ How to choose a family hotel in Norway: tips for parents

When choosing a holiday home, there are three things to focus on. The living room should be at least 24 square metres, breakfast should be included, and there should be an indoor area for children to play. Check if children under 12 can stay for free in the existing beds (this saves €30-50/night). If you need a kitchen, look for an "apartment hotel" or Class Apart rooms. A hotel near a station or fjord means you won't have to take any unnecessary transfers; parking is easier in the suburbs, where it is often free. Book at least 45 days in advance and choose a flexible rate. Plans with children change more often.

🏨 Which shops in Norway are the best for families?

Scandic Family — children under 12 stay and eat breakfast for free, and there is a waffle station in the lobby from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thon Hotels offers a 50% discount on a second room if it is booked for children. The Radisson Blu hotel has family rooms that are 34 square metres in size. They also have a Global Kids Club programme where kids can get a free backpack and menu with a penguin on it. Nordic Choice (Clarion/Comfort) has a special offer for kids: you can swap your points for ice cream and beanbag chairs.

💰 How much does a family room cost in 2025 and how can you save money?

The average price for a family room with a double bed and bunk bed is €180 in winter and €220 in summer. You can save money with the Stay 3 Pay 2 package at Thon, Strawberry cashback and Scandic Friends brunch credits. If you are going to stay for 5 nights or more, write to the booking department — many hotels offer a discount of 10-15% for long stays, and you don't have to pay in advance. Book Sunday-Monday: there is no business demand, and prices go down by 20%.

🏙 Where should you stay with your family in Oslo?

Scandic Byporten is near Oslo S. It has 28 m² family rooms, free waffles and direct access to Flytoget. The Thon Hotel Panorama has 45 m² apartments with a kitchen, which are perfect for families with children. Citybox Oslo is more budget-friendly: The "Small Family" room has bunk beds and costs €105. There is also a children's area with board games. Here's a handy tip: if you're travelling as a family (two adults and up to three kids aged 6-17), activate the Oslo Pass Family. This gives you access to museums and public transport for free. That means you could save around 1,200 Norwegian kroner over two days.

🏔 The best family hotels in the mountains and fjords

Geiranger Hotel Union is the best hotel in Geiranger. It has a lazy river pool, a Troll Lounge mini club and Family Deluxe rooms from €240. In Hardanger, Voss Resort Myrkdalen Hotel offers mountain bike rental and a children's kayaking school. If you want to go skiing, the Radisson Blu Resort Trysil is a good choice. You can ski straight from the hotel to the slopes, and there is also a Surf & Splash water park. All three restaurants offer a Kids Eat Free package outside of the busy season (children's menu).

🏊 Are there any hotels in Norway that have a water park or swimming pool for children?

Yes, the Quality Hotel Sarpsborg has the largest indoor water park, Superland (which is free for guests to use), and family rooms start at €170. The Radisson Blu Trysil hotel has a wave pool and a FlowRider surf simulator. In Bergen, Hotel Norge has a paddling pool and a heated playroom for children. When you arrive, you can book your time in the pool. Please note that there is a maximum number of guests allowed for health and safety reasons.

🍼 Do hotels provide cots, high chairs and children's menus?

Yes. At Scandic and Thon, cots for children aged 0-3 are free. You can book a cot in the "Extras" section of the website or by emailing the hotel. You don't have to pay for high chairs in restaurants. The children's menu includes salmon soup or meatballs (~89 NOK). There is a gluten-free corner for people with allergies. Please tell the hotel in advance if you have a lactose intolerance. The Saga Suites aparthotels have tableware for children in the kitchen.

🍽 I can't wait to find out what amazing discounts on food and accommodation are available for children!

We are delighted to announce our fantastic standard policy! For children aged 0-5 years old, we offer a complimentary entry, and for those aged 6-12, we have an amazing 50% discount on breakfast/buffet (approximately 85 NOK). The Scandic chain is offering a brilliant "Kids Eat Free" promotion, where children eat dinner for free when an adult main course is ordered. Great news! When you book two connecting rooms, Thon reduces the rate for the second room by 50%! And for the little ones, some hotels (Union Geiranger) offer delicious ice cream after 6 p.m. – all you have to do is show your guest bracelet and you're in for a treat!

🎯 So, what about organising some fun and exciting leisure activities for your child if they get bored at the hotel?

You've got to check out these amazing free activities: a waffle master class at Scandic, a movie night with popcorn at Radisson, board games and Xbox at Thon. And just outside the hotel, the Oslo/Bergen Pass gives you free admission to the amazing Bergen Aquarium and the incredible Technopolis in Stavanger. Check out this awesome life hack: download the Outtt app for short family trails of up to 5 km with audio stories about trolls!

🏞️ How to book an extra bed or connecting room?

Just enter your children in the search field on Booking, and the system will show you all the available family-type rooms. Once you've booked, just write to the hotel with the subject line "Need extra bed/connecting" and they'll take care of everything! Thon and Scandic will confirm within 24 hours and you won't need to worry about paying in advance! And if, for some reason, there aren't any available, Norwegian law (the Hotel Right) is on your side. It says the hotel has to provide one or pay you 25% of the rate. A screenshot of the confirmation email would be really helpful!

A family trip to Norway is a breeze! The Scandic and Thon chains have made planning a breeze with their fantastic "children under 12 stay free" policy, and ski resorts have made evening spas and water parks a standard service. Decide what's important to you: proximity to museums, a view of the fjord or running trails? Then book a family room 40–60 days in advance and combine the Kids Eat Free and Oslo/Bergen Pass Family packages to get the best deal! This way, a family of four can save up to €400 per week!

We would absolutely love to hear about your experience in the comments below – it will help other families plan their perfect holiday!
