🏨 Which 12 hotels made it onto the list of luxury icons for 2025?
The top 12 are: Britannia Hotel (Trondheim), The Thief (Oslo), Hotel Union Øye (Geirangerfjord), Juvet Landscape Hotel (Valdal), Kviknes Hotel (Sognefjord), Hotel Norge by Scandic (Bergen). The hotels are: Walaker Hotel (Solvorn), Farris Bad (Larvik), Solstrand Hotel & Bad (Hardanger), Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel (Aulta), Storfjord Hotel (Ørskog) and Lysebu Hotel (Oslo). They are all united by their original design, gastronomic focus and locations, which are attractions in themselves. Prices vary depending on the season, with the Solstrand option costing from €240 in March, and the River Suite at Juvet €720 in summer.
💰 How much does a night in a real 5-star hotel in Norway cost?
On average, a double room costs €420 in summer and €320 in winter. The most expensive months are July and August, and the Christmas period (20 December-3 January), when prices go up by 25%. Book mid-week (Tue-Wed-Thu): there is not much business at this time, and hotels launch a "Suite Escape" sale with a discount of 15%. Remember that prices in Juvet, Øye and Sorrisniva are always high because there aren't many rooms (6-30). But if you book 120 days before you travel, you can save up to €100 per night.
🌊 Which hotel should you choose for the best view of the fjord?
Hotel Union Øye has windows looking directly onto Geiranger. If you book the "Treasureroom Fjord View" category (which costs an extra €60) and ask for a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor, you will be able to see Geiranger. For Sognefjord, Kviknes Hotel is the perfect place to stay. It has a wooden wing that was built in the 1890s, a balcony with great views and a modern tea room. For Hardangerfjord, the favourite is the Solstrand Hotel & Bad, which has an 88-metre infinity pool and a lawn that slopes down to the water. Tip: Stay for two nights or more. Spend the first evening at the spa and the second on a cruise to the waterfalls.
🍽 Which luxury hotels in Norway are famous for their food?
At Britannia, the Speilsalen restaurant has a Michelin star and a tasting menu called "Trønder bounty" (12 courses, €225). The Thief serves local oysters and Arctic halibut at the THIEF Foodbar; the "Dinner & Stay" package saves 15% on the room. The Walaker Hotel is a hidden gem: you can enjoy a four-course dinner in a 19th-century vintage cellar, hosted by Sigrid. Book your table at the same time as your room — there aren't many slots available, especially at the weekend.
💦 Where is the best spa and thermal experience?
The main spa is Farris Bad in Larvik. It is built on a natural mineral spring and has 16 saunas and a crystal salt cave. A day pass costs NOK 595, but guests can enter for free. Solstrand has a sea bath and an ice room with views of Hardanger. In Oslo, you will find a luxury spa at The Well (accessible to Lysebu guests with a 15-minute transfer). Here's a little secret: if you book treatments on weekdays before 2 p.m., you can get a discount of 10-15%.
🎁 What amazing services do Norwegian luxury hotels offer?
Juvet Landscape organises a private photo shoot against the backdrop of the Gudbrandsjuvet waterfall and a helicopter tour to Geiranger — €1,450 for 50 minutes. The Thief offers a "Curator On Call" service: a personal tour of the Astrup Fearnley Museum with a curator. At Sorrisniva Igloo, you can enjoy mulled wine in ice glasses every morning. In the morning, you can go on a dog sled ride to see the northern lights. Britannia has a Rolls-Royce Phantom EWB available if you want it for airport transfers.
📅 How to save up to 20% when booking a luxury hotel.
Sign up with Small Luxury Hotels (SLH Invited) and Preferred Hotels I-Prefer — they offer upgrades when they are available and 600 bonus points (~€30). Write to the hotel directly. The "3-for-2" deal is available in March and November. Use your Visa Infinite/MC World Elite cards: You will get 4-6% cashback and late check-out. A great way to save money is to buy a gift voucher in December. Hotels sell "Christmas Certificates" with a 15% discount, which can then be used in the summer.
👨👩👧 What options are available for families with children?
Hotel Norge offers family suites that are 50 m² in size, as well as a kids' club and a breakfast that is full of "adventure", which is prepared by a pastry chef. Solstrand is famous for its children's pool and heated playroom. Britannia issues mini-passports: children collect stamps in restaurants and receive a souvenir bear. Children under 6 often stay for free in existing beds, but check the rules: Øye and Juvet do not accommodate children under 12 because of their "quiet retreat" concept.
🐶 Are there any luxury hotels in Norway that allow pets?
Yes: The Thief accepts dogs weighing up to 25 kg for 450 NOK. This includes a bowl, bed and dog snack. Britannia — 500 NOK and a special room on the ground floor (with access to the garden).
Pets not allowed in restaurants. Storfjord Hotel allows dogs weighing up to 15 kg. There is a deposit of 1,000 NOK, which is refunded upon departure. Please check the breed and weight before booking, as some properties have size restrictions.
🚁 How to get to a luxury hotel: transfers, helicopters?
Most 5-star hotels offer a private Mercedes V-Class from the airport — €220 ≈ Oslo Gardermoen → The Thief. Union Øye and Juvet are working with helicopter company Helitrans: The flight from Ålesund to Øye takes 18 minutes and costs €1,250 for up to five people. Britannia provides a Porsche Taycan "Green Transfer" to Trondheim railway station — for free for guests staying in Suites. You must book at least 48 hours in advance and say what you will be taking with you. There is a 15kg limit per person in the helicopter.
When you stay in a luxury hotel in Norway, you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the fjord outside your window, delicious king crab under the northern lights and service that you almost won't notice.
