🐾 Pet-Friendly Hotels Norway 2025: Travelling with Animals 🏔
Norway is absolutely amazing – it's one of the most pet-friendly countries in Europe! Here, you can take your dog on a stress-free cruise through the fjords, book a room with a bowl and a bed, and go fishing with your friendly cat in a rorbu. The great thing is that rules and prices vary between different chains, and not all locations are suitable for walking, which means more opportunities to explore! In this guide, we've gathered all the frequently asked questions from pet owners, covering everything from extra fees to the necessary documents, finding a park near your hotel, and awesome life hacks to save 10-15% on your booking! I'm delighted to tell you that the information has been verified on Booking and the websites of Thon, Scandic, Clarion, as well as the Mattilsynet veterinary services (July 2025). Save this article — we update it every quarter so that your four-legged friends can travel comfortably and safely.
🐕 Which chains in Norway officially accept pets and under what conditions?
Leaders: Scandic, Thon Hotels, Nordic Choice (Clarion, Comfort) and Radisson Blu. Scandic charges a fixed fee of NOK 250 per room for the entire stay (up to 2 pets), including a bowl and treats. Thon charges NOK 400, but provides a blanket and a "Dog Bar" with water in the lobby. Nordic Choice charges NOK 300, payable at check-in, and Comfort Hotel provides pillows with the logo🐾 . Radisson charges NOK 450 and has a 25 kg weight limit. Pets above the limit are only allowed by individual agreement.
💰 How much does it cost to stay with a pet in different regions?
The average fee is 250-500 NOK per room. Prices are higher in cities (Oslo, Bergen): Radisson Blu Plaza – 450 NOK. In the fjords, Thon Hotel Orion Bergen charges NOK 300. At campsites and rorbu huts in Lofoten, the fee is nominal – NOK 200 or even NOK 0 (Nusfjord Artic Resort: cats are welcome free of charge). Discount: Level 3 Scandic Friends programme members receive a 15% discount on the pet fee. Book a "Pet Room" in advance – it's cheaper than adding the service at reception.
📄 What documents are required to bring an animal into Norway?
You must have an EU Pet Passport, an ISO 11784/85 microchip, rabies vaccination (≥ 21 days) and treatment for tapeworms (24–120 hours before entry) for dogs. Random checks may be carried out at the border (Toll); the fine for not having the documents is NOK 4,000. Hotels rarely check passports, but may request the microchip number when booking. Tip: download PDF copies to your phone and cloud storage to show during online check-in.
🌳 How can I find a green area for walking my dog near the hotel?
In cities, use the Turkart app: it shows parks with "hundelufting" (leash-free areas). At Thon Panorama Oslo, Akershusstranda Park is a 5-minute walk away, and at Scandic Byparken Bergen, Nygårdsparken is 7 minutes away. On the fjords, most rorbu cabins have their own pier and lawn. Please note that from 15 April to 20 August, dogs must be kept on a leash in forests to avoid disturbing wildlife.
🍽 Are pets allowed in restaurants and public areas of the hotel?
By law, animals are not allowed in the dining area, but hotels allocate tables on the terrace or in the bar-lobby. Scandic Oslo City has a "Pet Corner" with three tables at the entrance. The Thief provides room service breakfast at no extra charge if you are staying with your dog. Please request a collar and leash in the lift; leaving your pet unattended will result in a fine of NOK 1,000.
🚪 What should you do if you need to leave your pet in your room?
Most hotels require that dogs not be left alone for more than 2 hours. Hang a "Pet in Room" sign on your door. For longer absences, use Dyrepass, a local app for finding certified dog sitters (180 NOK/hour). Some Thon and Scandic hotels in Oslo work with DogWalker.no (30-minute walk for 150 NOK). Check in advance, as this service is often booked up during high season.
🏞 What pet-friendly options are available outside the cities: rorbu, camping, mountains?
In Lofoten, we recommend Reine Rorbuer – NOK 300 fee, leash and bowls. Flåm Camping – pets are free, but must be kept on a leash. The mountain hotel Storfjord Hotel (Ørskog) welcomes dogs up to 15 kg, and the Trollskog trail is right outside the door. Stock up on biodegradable bags – there is a fine of 600 NOK for littering in national parks.
🚢 Can I take pets on ships, trains or planes within the country?
Vy trains – free transport in a carrier up to 40×25×55 cm; larger animals – 50% of a 2nd class ticket. Hurtigruten: not allowed in cabins, but there is a climate-controlled container with CCTV (150 NOK). SAS/Norwegian: up to 8 kg in the cabin (50 €), 80 € in checked baggage. Hotels near ports (Clarion The Edge Tromsø) offer late check-out for guests waiting for a cruise ship with pets.
⚠ What hidden costs may arise?
Extra cleaning after shedding – 500 NOK if your pet sheds. Damage to furniture – compensation according to the price list (Thon sofa – 7,000 NOK). Some campsites charge NOK 50 for a pet shower. Paid lifts to the trails (Fløibanen) – NOK 25 per dog. Travel Insurance Pet (Gjensidige) can help reduce costs – it covers damages up to NOK 20,000.
🛎 How to book a pet-friendly room and save money?
Filter for "Pets allowed" on Booking; after selecting, write to the hotel immediately – the direct rate Pet2025 (available at Thon and Scandic) gives you a 10% discount on the room rate + free treats. Strawberry Rewards members get free late check-out (usually NOK 200). Book mid-week and outside of festivals: on weekends, the fee is sometimes increased by 20%. Ask for a ground floor room – it's cheaper and easier to walk your pet.
Travelling around Norway with your pet can be easy and comfortable — just prepare in advance, taking into account the rules, booking and the comfort of your four-legged friend!
