👶 Barnehage: makspris, meals and benefits for families
So, how much should you allocate for nursery school in your monthly budget? We are delighted to provide you with all the information you need about the amazing features of this payment system! From the simple way it calculates your payments to the fantastic discounts for those who need it most, we have got it covered. And that's not all – we have some incredible interactive tools to make things even easier, like a monthly payment calculator and an "income → payment/month" table. And to top it all off, there are brief examples by city, FAQs, and a disclaimer.
🧭 Makspris and what is included
Makspris is a benchmark for the maximum parental fee for a place in a nursery (for "core hours"). The following are added directly to it:
● Meals (kostpenger) — a fixed amount per month/child.
● Additional services (if any) — clubs/after-school care.
● Adjustment for attendance — if attendance is incomplete, the fee is proportional.
Important: discounts apply to the fee for a place, while meals and additional services are usually paid in full (without discounts).

🧮 Income-based discounts and discounts for siblings
● Income benefit. If the family's income is below a certain threshold, part of the "core" hours may be free. In practice, this reduces the fee for a place in proportion to the share of free hours. In the calculator, this is set by the fields "income threshold" and "free hours/week".
● Sibling discount. For the second child, the fee for a place is usually lower, and for the third and subsequent children, it is even lower. In the calculator, you can set the percentages for the 2nd and 3rd+ children.
● Important: discounts apply to the fee for a place, while meals are usually paid for in full. Always calculate the "total/child": fee for a place (with discounts) + meals.
🗺️ Examples by city (calculation logic)
● Oslo. Meals may cost slightly more than in smaller cities; at full capacity, the total per child is mainly determined by makspris, meals and the presence of an income allowance.
● Bergen. Due to the rainy months, some families plan more "home" days — it is convenient to calculate partial occupancy (for example, 80–90%) and see how the total changes.
● Trondheim. Families with students/interns are more likely to be eligible for income-based subsidies — it is useful to check the "threshold" and free hours.
● Stavanger. In areas with high parental employment, a full day is a common choice; for two children in kindergarten, the sibling discount is noticeable.
● Tromsø. In winter, the cost of food and additional equipment increases — it is convenient to keep a "reserve" in your monthly budget and review your workload by season.

FAQ
Makspris covers the cost of a place in the nursery for the basic hours. Meals and any additional services are usually paid for separately. Therefore, the final bill for a child is the cost of a place (taking into account discounts) plus meals.
The fee for the second child is usually lower, and for the third and subsequent children, it is even lower. The discount applies specifically to the "fee for a place" and not to meals. You can set the percentages in the calculator and see the total for the family.
The fee for a place is proportional to the attendance rate. If a child attends, for example, 80% of the time, take the maximum price and multiply it by 0.8. Meals are usually a fixed amount per month.
If the family's income is below the selected threshold, part of the "core hours" may be free. In practice, this reduces the fee for the place in proportion to the share of free hours. Set the "threshold" and "free hours/week" in the calculator.
Meals are a separate expense item: food purchases, kitchen, etc. Therefore, even with discounts on the place, the cost of meals is most often paid in full. Keep this in mind when planning your budget.
Terms and schedule of visits, conditions for recalculation in case of changes in attendance, amount and composition of payments, procedure for paying for meals, and deadlines for notification of changes.
It is often possible to do so from the beginning of a new month or period, but changes must be agreed in advance. Keep in mind that recalculations may not happen immediately — allow for a transition period.
