Where can you fill your shopping basket for less: Kiwi, Rema 1000, Coop Extra or Oda.no? A comprehensive price comparison of Norwegian grocery chains in 2025

Norway is one of the top three countries in Europe for food prices, but there's a big difference between the prices in different parts of the country. For a long time, discounters Kiwi and Rema 1000 have been competing to offer the best prices, Coop Extra gives bonuses to their regular customers, and Oda.no promises a 5% discount for online delivery. We wanted to find out where the shopping basket is really cheapest, so we went shopping at four different chains and selected 30 basic items (milk, bread, eggs, chicken, vegetables, household chemicals).

How much does a basic milk basket (milk, butter, cheese) cost in each chain?

You'll be pleased to hear that a litre of Tine Melk milk has the same fat content of 1.2%, and it's available at the amazing price of just 21.90 kr at Kiwi! Thanks to its own 'Pris i bun' discount, Rema 1000 sells it for 22.50 kr (+ Æ-cashback option of 10% on the first batch), Coop Extra sells it for 23.20 kr, but 1% is returned as a Trumf bonus. Oda.no is a great place to buy it online, with a price of 21.50 kr. But, there's a delivery fee of 59 kr, so it's really only worth it if you spend more than 700 kr. You'll be pleased to hear that the lovely Tine Meier butter (500 g) is available at the following prices:

Kiwi: 43.90 kr

Rema 1000: 44.30 kr

Coop Extra: 45.90 kr

Oda: 42.50 kr We've got some great deals on Norvegia cheese right now! You can get 500 g for as low as 69.90 kr at Kiwi or 73.50 kr at Coop. Hey, just so you know, the dairy basket is actually 5–7 kr cheaper at Kiwi, but if you activate the Æ-coupon (15% discount) at Rema 1000, the prices are pretty much the same.

Breakfast staples: bread, eggs, coffee — where are the lowest prices?

Hey, just so you know, the 750 g pack of First Price bread is 12 kr at Kiwi and Rema 1000, and the same price at Grovbrød (0.5 kg). Hey, just so you know, Coop Extra sells its 'Xtra' for 13.50 kr, which is pretty similar to the price of Kiwi, and they give back 0.14 kr as a bonus, which is awesome! Hey guys, just wanted to let you know about this awesome deal I spotted at Oda! They're offering 2 for 50 kr, which works out at just 25 kr per pack. That's way cheaper than the usual 29.90 kr, 31.50 kr, or 32.20 kr at Kiwi, Rema 1000, or Coop, respectively. Hey guys, just a heads-up that Friele Filter Coffee (250 g) is on offer at Kiwi for 27.50 kr, Rema for 29.90 kr, Coop for 31.40 kr and Oda for 28.30 kr after Easter. I totally get it, so let me tell you how much a basic breakfast with four items will set you back: Hey, just so you know, the prices are Kiwi 71 kr, Rema 1000 74 kr, Coop Extra 78 kr, and Oda 73 kr (+ delivery).

What are the prices for a ‘chicken dinner’ (fillet, rice, frozen vegetables)?

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know about some awesome deals on chicken fillet! At Kiwi, it's going for just 119 kr in the May promotion, '100 varer til coop-pris'. Over at Rema 1000, it's at 124 kr (but often with a 15 kr coupon), Coop Extra is offering it for 128 kr, and Oda's got it for 123 kr. Enjoy! Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that Uncle Ben's 1 kg rice is still going strong at Kiwi for 23.90 kr, Rema for 24.50 kr, Coop for 26.20 kr, and Oda for 24.50 kr. You'll be pleased to hear that the Fryst Grønnsaker 750 g mix is available at the following prices: 18.90 kr at Kiwi (First Price), 19.40 kr at Rema, 20.90 kr at Coop and 18.70 kr at Oda. I totally understand that you want to know how much a chicken dinner for a family of four will cost. Hey, just wanted to let you know the prices I spotted today: Kiwi was 161 kr, Rema 1000 168 kr (‑15 kr with AE coupon = 153 kr), Coop 175 kr (‑1% = 173 kr), Oda 166 kr (+ delivery).

Household chemicals: Hey, I was just wondering, do you know who offers the best deals on fairy, paper and washing powder?

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that the Fairy 330 ml is available! Hey, just so you know, the prices are 18.50 kr for Kiwi, 18.30 kr for Rema 1000, 19.80 kr for Coop Extra, and 17.90 kr for Oda (though this does depend on the delivery date). Hey, just wanted to let you know about this awesome deal on toilet paper at Rema 1000. For every two weeks, you can get eight rolls of Lambi toilet paper for just 38 kr! That's a sweet discount of 40% compared to the regular price of 52.90 kr at Kiwi, 48.00 kr at Coop, and 41 kr at Oda. Hey, just wanted to let you know that the Omo Color 2.5 kg is currently available at a sweet price of 74 kr. If you're a member, you can get it for even better deals at 76 kr at Kiwi, 78 kr at Rema, and 75 kr at Oda. Hey, just wanted to let you know that Rema 1000 is doing some awesome deals on chemical products right now. But if you're not using coupons, the difference in price might not be as big as 5–7 kr.

How do loyalty clubs work and when do they really pay off?

We know how much you love our Æ‑app (Rema 1000), so we're delighted to let you know that it gives an automatic 10% discount on the 15 items you buy most often. We update this list every 10 days, and every seventh Saturday you'll get 50% off fruit and veg. Hey, I totally get it - for a family on 4,000 kr, saving 400 kr a month is nothing to sneeze at! Hey, just so you know, Trumpf (Kiwi, Coop) gives you 1% off your total bill, but on 'Trippel torsdag' (Triple Thursday) it gives you 3% back! Buy 1,500 kr and get 45 kr extra. Oda Smarte Kjøp automatically reduces the price if the product has become cheaper by the time it is delivered (the average price is reduced by around 2%). For orders of 1,200 kr, you save 24 kr. This means that the delivery cost is partially offset.

Fruit and vegetables: is Kiwi really the cheapest?

'Klass 1' tomatoes (500 g): Kiwi 19.90 kr, Rema 1000 20.50 kr, Coop 21.90 kr, Oda 19.70 kr. Bananas 1 kg: Kiwi is 15.40 kr, Rema 1000 is 15.90 kr, Coop is 16.50 kr, and Oda is 15.30 kr. Pink Lady apples 1 kg: Kiwi is 29.90 kr, Rema 1000 is 31.50 kr, Coop is 34.90 kr and Oda is 30.50 kr. Thanks to deals with Bama, Kiwi always has the lowest prices on 80% of items in the produce section; Rema comes second to Æ coupons.

Oda.no online delivery: when is it worth it, and when isn't it?

From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, the entry fee is 0 kr for orders of ≥ 1,000 kr. For all other orders, the entry fee is 59 kr. If you order a 'borscht basket' (a Russian dish of pickled beetroots) for 500 kr, the delivery charge will be 12% of the total bill. But during promotional weeks, Oda gives a 5% discount on all fresh products and a lower fixed price for dairy products than Kiwi's. If you buy a month's worth of groceries at once (2,500 kr), delivery is free, and Oda becomes the best, provided that Kiwi does not have any '100 varer' promotions.

Secret discounts: what does the 'gått ut i dato' price tag mean?

Kiwi and Rema 1000 must reduce the price of goods by 40% on the day they expire. Rema calls them 'Siste Sjansen' and puts yellow price tags on them; Kiwi puts labels on them saying '-50%'. You can save 60–80 kr/basket on meat and ready-made salads if you look carefully. Coop has introduced 'Matredder', which gives you 60% off the day before the best before date. Oda has 'Kort Holdbarhet', which means it has 2 days until the expiry date and a 30% discount. The best time to go shopping for a bargain is between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. By then, the shelves have been restocked and there are fewer people there.

How can you work out the total cost of all the items in a basket at the end of the month?

Our bill is based on 30 items: Kiwi 1,321 kr; Rema 1000 1,347 kr (-10% discount → 1,212 kr); Coop Extra 1,392 kr (-1% Trumf discount → 1,378 kr); Oda 1,315 kr (+ delivery 59 kr → 1,374 kr). So, Rema 1000 is cheaper than Kiwi when you use coupons, but Kiwi is cheaper without coupons. Coop stays in third place, but only just, thanks to its Medlemspris promotions. Without bonus days, it would be in fourth place. Oda needs to receive large orders to make the delivery cost worthwhile.

What are some other ways to save an extra 10% on top of price wars?

1) Plan your meals for the week and only go shopping once a week. This way, you won't buy things you don't need (you can save an average of 12%). 2) Use the Kiwi app to find fresh produce, the Rema app to find chemicals (use the Æ coupon) and the Oda app for bulky items (use the dash — time savings). 3) Use the app Too Good To Go (49 kr package, actual value ~130 kr) for dinner twice a week — you will save 640 kr a month. 4) Activate Trumf-Visa — get an extra 0.5% off any purchase. 5) Look at Kiwi's '100 varer til fast lavpris' list, which is updated every three months. Save your old receipt and ask for 'prisgaranti' if the price goes up.

The prices in Norwegian supermarkets can be confusing. Kiwi tries to keep its prices low every day, but Rema 1000 often wins over loyal customers using the Æ app. Coop Extra gives you extra kroner with Trumf bonuses, and Oda.no turns your kitchen into a 'collection point' for an economical online market if you buy in bulk. The best shopping basket is made by combining different formats, using club coupons and 'spaszenka' with red stickers. This reduces your bill by 15–20%, and you can spend the money saved on a trip to see the copper domes in Bergen or a night train ticket to see the northern lights. Your DRY Norway becomes quite friendly — you just need to know which fjord prices have dropped today.
