How much does a road trip through Norway really cost: petrol, toll roads, ferries and accommodation (2025 guide)

A road trip through Norway is something many of us dream of. Isn't it great to be able to choose your own route, stop for photos and even stay overnight by the fjords? Hey, I've heard this really lovely old saying: "Beans and fuel at the petrol station are the best way to stretch your budget." We've gone through all the expenses with a fine-tooth comb: fuel, EV charging, toll roads, ferries, camping and food on the road. I've put together a list of the 10 most important questions, the current prices for 2025 and some tips on how to fit a two-week road trip into an affordable budget.

And how much do petrol, diesel and EV charging cost?

In July 2025, the average price of 95 E10 was 22.4 kr/l (≈ 1.90 €/l), while diesel was 20.9 kr/l. If you're heading along the E6, you'll find that Circle K and Shell petrol stations are a little bit more expensive, but just a few krónur more. On the other hand, St1/Spar corner stations are a bit cheaper, so you might want to keep that in mind. Hey, just so you know, the Fuelio NO app is showing a sweet discount of 0.60 kr when you pay with Vipps. If you're looking for a quick charge for your electric car, you're in luck! At Fast DC Ionity, it's only 6.00 kr/kWh (with a subscription fee of just 4.50 kr). And if you're more of a fan of traditional AC charging, Fortum has you covered with 3.90 kr/kWh. Plus, when you're camping overnight, you can enjoy a fixed price of 70 kr (around 13 kWh), so you don't have to worry about running out of power during your adventure. Hey, so for those of you travelling on the Oslo–Lofoten route (which is 2,600 km), it's pretty amazing that a petrol car using 6.8 l/100 km will set you back about 3,960 kr. And for those of you who are more eco-friendly and want to go electric, an EV will use 17 kWh/100 km — which works out at 2,700 kr.

AutoPASS: how does it work and what are the rates?

Don't worry if you don't have a chip, because you can still pay the 'full takst' – which is 36 kr during the day and 23 kr at night (Oslo). I totally get where you're coming from, but I think electric cars are the way of the future. I'm sure you'll agree that they make up 70% of the market. Don't worry - we'll send you the AutoPASS chip by post for free! Just make a deposit of 200 kr, and we'll get it to you. Registration will reduce the rate by 20%, and after 40 trips/month, the 'månedstak' option will be activated — the rest will be free! On the E6 Nordland, the Poikk and Sørfold bridges require 132 kr per trip; with a trial pass, the price is 104 kr. Hey, just a friendly reminder that you can activate the EPC-Plus contract for foreigners online in just 48 hours. If you're a bit late, no worries! You'll just receive a bill by post, along with a small 30 kr fee.

Ferries: how much do Fjord1 and Hurtigbåt cost for a passenger car?

Hey, just so you know, the Fjord1 ferry from Hella to Vangsnes in Sognefjord is super affordable! It'll only cost you 152 kr for your car if it's under 6 m, and just 59 kr for adults. And if you're driving an electric car, you're in luck, because passengers ride free! And if you pay with AutoPASS, you'll get an extra 10% off! Hey, if you're thinking of taking a short trip with Hurtigruten, they've got this awesome option where you can hop on a car and go from Ålesund to Geiranger in just 4 hours! It'll cost you 790 kr plus 250 kr for the driver's ticket, but it's definitely worth it for a quick and comfortable journey. We really appreciate you volunteering with FjordClean, and to say a big thank you, we'd like to give you a free ferry coupon each month. Hey, just a friendly reminder to book your trip in August as early as you can. If you leave it to the last minute, you might find yourself in a 1-2 hour queue, which is no fun!

How much does parking cost in cities and how can I save money?

The Oslo green zone is just 46 kr/hour, and Bergen is a very affordable 41 kr/hour. You'll be pleased to know that parking in the suburbs is just 27 kr per day, plus a Ruter ticket for 44 kr. Don't worry about getting here, you'll be able to leave your car for free overnight (6 p.m.–7 a.m.) at the Vestli T-banen station and hop on the metro to reach the city centre. Don't worry about parking – it's free at the fjord pier! Just look for the 'avgiftsfri' sign and you're all set!

Where to stay: camping, rorbu or wild ‘allemannsretten’?

We have an official campsite here where you can enjoy the comfort of electricity for just 320 kr per night. And if you need to freshen up, there's a shower available for 20 kr for 5 minutes. If you book through Norske Campingkort (200 kr/year), you get a 10% discount and free Wi-Fi. Hey, if you're looking to stay in a cosy fisherman's cabin, we've got great news for you! In Lofoten, you can rent a rorbu for just 1,400 kr per night. And if you're planning a trip in May or September, you'll get an amazing 30% off! And the best part is that wild camping is completely free! Just pitch your tent more than 150 metres from any houses and you're good to go. In Folgefonna National Park, we just ask that you take care of your waste and use a cat hole for your toilet needs.

Food on the road: what are the prices at petrol stations and how can you reduce your bill?

Hey, just thought I'd let you know that Circle K is offering a delicious hot dog (Pølse m/brød) for just 32 kr, and if you need your coffee refill, it's only 19 kr. ☺️ Hey, why not check out the Kiwi supermarket? They've got some great deals: a baguette for just 11 kr, cheese for 29 kr, and bananas at the amazing price of 15 kr per kilo! Look for Sjømat Utomat vending machines in the fjords — you can get fresh salmon for 49 kr per serving. The average lunch for two people on a road trip costs 90 kr if you cook it yourself, but 250 kr at a café.

Toll tunnels and bridges: how much should you budget?

The new Ryfylke Tunnel (14 km) costs 192 kr for cars and 95 kr for motorcycles. Eiksund costs 137 kr; electric vehicles (EVs) get a 50% discount. The Hardanger Bridge costs 165 kr. The Vegvesen website 'Bompengekalkulator' is a tool that can be used to plan a route and calculate the total cost. The route is Oslo to Stavanger to Bergen to Trondheim (2,000 km). The tolls are 1,470 kr. The EV toll is 960 kr.

And what about climate surcharges? What about the CO2 tax and the ban on EV benefits?

From 2025, diesel vehicles that produce more than 180 g of CO2 per kilometre will have an extra tax of 2.9 kr/l. EVs no longer have free parking in central Oslo, but pay 50% of the parking fee and 70% for AutoPASS. EV router consumption has increased, but it is still 30% cheaper than petrol.

How much does car travel insurance cost, and what does it cover?

You don't need a green card; MTPL (Norge) is valid in the EEA. You can get extra Viking Road Assist insurance for 249 kr for 14 days. This covers you if you need to be evacuated, if you need to recharge your EV or if you need a new wheel. People from other countries pay €8 a day to rent a car from Rent-a-Wreck. Don't forget a mosquito net; insurance won't cover midge bites.

You can visit all the places in Norway without spending as much money as it costs to fly first class to Tokyo. You can save money by using an AutoPASS chip, booking ferries in advance, using a night pass and shopping at the supermarket. This means the cost is similar to other European countries. An electric car can save you another 15%. Get a thermos, download the Vegvesen calculator and fill your Too Good To Go bags — and you'll be greeted by the fjords, mountains and Arctic highways with stunning views, not bills with three zeros. Welcome on your trip!
