War Graves for the Unknown Fallen is a burial ground with historical significance, which marks the memory of those who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. The cemetery contains a separate burial field for fallen from the Commonwealth of Nations, where individual gravestones are made of white Portland stone. In addition, there is a burial ground for Soviet soldiers, which was laid out in 1947, and which also helps to shed light on the various nations' losses during the wars.
A central element of the cemetery is the Cross of Sacrifice, which was unveiled in 1949 by General Otto Ruge. This monument, together with a memorial to Commonwealth soldiers, unveiled by H.M., underlines the international significance of the site. The cemetery also has several free-standing monuments and has been the subject of historical grave removals, which further reinforces its cultural and historical value.
