Hovedøya Kunstsal is located on Hovedøya, an island in the Oslo Fjord, and is known for being the country's largest half-timbered building, Lavetthuset. The gallery rooms house a summer exhibition with works from 16 prominent visual artists, including renowned names such as Lars Lerin, Hanne Borchgrevink and Tore Hansen. The exhibition presents a varied selection of works of art, from unique lithographs and etchings to new photographs, and gives an insight into modern artistic expression.
In addition to the permanent exhibitions, Hovedøya Kunstsal functions as a studio-community for artists from the Kommandantboligen. The exhibition "Paths between us" explores links between different artistry, and creates a dialogue between the works. The building itself is a beautiful setting for the art, and the site is easily accessible by boat from Rådhuskaia, making it a popular destination for art lovers.
