The Freiaklokken is a historic landmark in Oslo, known for its illuminated advertisement which was lit for the first time in 1909. The advertisement has been part of the cityscape for over a century and has contributed to a festive atmosphere in the streets, especially at re-lighting. In 1925, the candlestick became a permanent part of Oslo's cityscape, and it has been a symbol of Freia chocolate over the years.
The light advertising has also received international attention. During his visit in 1910, American President Theodor Roosevelt was impressed by Freia's light advertising. The Norwegian artist Lalla Carlsen also expressed her enthusiasm for the advertising at the Castle, which shows its cultural importance. In 1956, the light advertising was modernized with fluorescent tubes that changed colour, which has helped to maintain its relevance and attractiveness in the cityscape.
