In Oslo there is a historic telephone booth that also functions as a free library. These red telephone booths are recognized as cultural monuments and design icons in Norway, and have been in use for over 85 years, largely unchanged. The kiosks have a special place in Norwegian cultural history, and many have nostalgic memories associated with them. The last phone booth with a dial tone was removed in 2016, but there are still around 100 protected phone booths spread across the country.
Telenor Kulturarv works to preserve these kiosks and encourages creative ideas for reuse. Telephone kiosks represent an important part of Norwegian history and culture, and help preserve memories from a time when they were a central part of communication in society. The historic telephone kiosk in Oslo gives visitors the opportunity to experience this part of the cultural heritage, while also offering books for loan.
