Hovedøya monastery, founded in 1147, is one of Norway's largest and richest monasteries from the Middle Ages. The monastery was dissolved in 1532 after being looted and burned, and today only ruins remain of the original facility. Located on Hovedøya, an island outside Oslo, the ruins provide an insight into Norway's religious and cultural history, as well as the importance of medieval architecture.
Excavations and reconstructions have been carried out on the site, which have helped to preserve the remains of the monastery. The preserved ruins are set in scenic, wooded surroundings, providing a peaceful atmosphere for visitors.
