Standard Bensin is a rebuilt copy of a petrol station from Holmestrand, originally established in 1928. The building is constructed in concrete and represents a neoclassical style from the 1920s. The station houses original ESSO pumps and equipment, which gives an authentic insight into the petrol stations of the past and their importance for transport and trade in Norway.
As part of the Norwegian Folk Museum, Standard Bensin contributes to illustrating Norwegian cultural history. The exhibition includes a Volkswagen from 1967, which helps to show the development of car transport in the country. The tiger emblem, which was first used in Norway in 1923, is also part of the station's history. Visitors gain an insight into the history of traffic along an important Norwegian highway, which gives a deeper understanding of how transport has shaped society.
