The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) is responsible for managing Norway's water and energy resources. The Directorate works with securing the power supply and handling the risk of floods and landslides. NVE offers hydrological data and analyses, as well as watercourse management and licensing for watercourse measures. Research and development in energy and natural hazards are also key tasks, in addition to supervision of energy plants and watercourse facilities.
NVE faces several challenges, including climate change, renewable energy, and the internationalization of the industry and regulations. The Directorate is the national professional institution for hydrology and focuses on improving society's ability to deal with natural hazards. NVE arranges webinars and natural hazard forums, and publishes reports and statistics on the power market, with the aim of promoting sustainable energy.
The head office is in Oslo, and NVE has five regional offices in the country. In addition, avalanche monitoring has been established in Stranda and Kåfjord. With 750 employees with interdisciplinary expertise, NVE is a directorate under the Ministry of Energy.
