The Language Council is the state's administrative body in language matters and is tasked with following up Norwegian language policy on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Equality. The organization works to strengthen the Norwegian language and linguistic diversity, with an overarching goal of securing Norwegian as a full-fledged language. This also includes safeguarding the multilingual diversity in society.

As part of its services, the Language Council offers dictionaries for both Bokmål and Nynorsk, as well as resources related to clear language, linguistic duties and rights. They offer online courses and teaching, including training in Nynorsk. In addition, they carry out technical language and terminology work, deal with questions about place names and names of state bodies, and engage in language technology and artificial intelligence. The Language Council also conducts surveys on language use in business to map and analyze the language situation in various sectors.
