The Norwegian Academy of Language and Literature was founded in 1953 with the aim of protecting the national language. The academy works with language research, standardization and the dissemination of literature, and has a central role in the development of the Norwegian language. Through the publication of dictionaries and glossaries, they standardize the national language, and their best-known work is the Norwegian Academy's dictionary (NAOB).
The academy also participates in the publication of Thorleif Dahl's Cultural Library and contributes to the series Norwegian classics tell and Norwegian essayists. The academy's presidium consists of five members who are involved in language debates and spelling reforms, underscoring their commitment to linguistic development and preservation.
