The Gjensidigestiftelsen is Norway's largest foundation and has a history that stretches back over 200 years. It was converted from a non-profit foundation to a financial foundation in 2010, in connection with Gjensidige Forsikring being listed on the stock exchange as a public limited company. The foundation currently owns approximately 62.24% of the shares in Gjensidige, and its financial purpose includes management of this ownership as well as passing on dividends to non-life insurance customers.

The foundation focuses on creating good lives in a safe society by supporting socially beneficial purposes. It gives distributions to leisure clubs and projects that promote enjoyment of nature, and engages in initiatives for digital leisure and a safe upbringing. Gjensidigestiftelsen also organizes annual conferences and has an applicant portal for support schemes, where individuals and organizations can apply for funds for various projects. In addition, the foundation is open for nominations for the 2026 customer election.
