Borgarsyssel Museum is located in Østfold's only medieval town, Sarpsborg, and was founded in 1921. The museum aims to document and communicate Østfold's cultural history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Visitors can explore exhibitions about the medieval town of Borg, as well as experience interactive activities such as Viking towns in Minecraft. In Olav's Hall, you can learn about the town's founder, Olav Haraldsson, and participate in treasure hunts to gain a deeper understanding of the town's history.
The open-air museum at Borgarsyssel Museum consists of 20 antique buildings that represent different aspects of life in Østfold. Here you can get to know the lives of factory workers, farmers and priests from the 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. In the ruin park, which includes the remains of St. Nicholas' Church from 1115, there are opportunities for picnics, and the children's farm offers animal encounters for the youngest. The museum organizes guided tours every hour during the summer season and has several events throughout the year.
