The Norwegian Sound Institute, also known as the Norwegian Sound Institute Foundation, was established in 1984 through an agreement between the municipality of Stavanger and Arne Dørumsgaard. The institute is funded by the municipality of Stavanger and houses one of the world's largest private collections of sound recordings. The collection includes 120,000 LP records, 50,000 78 records, 10,000 reel-to-reel tapes, 5,000 video and music cassettes, as well as 5,000 music books, record catalogs and magazines. The total volume of the material amounts to approximately 90 cubic meters or 42 tons.
The collection has a particular focus on vocal music from the first half of the 20th century, but also contains a significant number of recordings of Norwegian music and Norwegian musicians. Despite the extensive collection, the website is currently parked, and there are no active services or information available. The domain is registered by Domeneshop AS, and it is possible that e-mail services are still in use by the owner.
