The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra (SSO) was founded in 1938 and has since developed into one of Scandinavia's most successful orchestras. With 85 musicians from 23 different nations, the orchestra represents a diverse musical culture. The SSO has made numerous recordings and has given concerts in several countries, including Japan, the USA, Germany and Russia. The orchestra is known for its international ambitions and innovative approach to symphonic music.
The orchestra rehearses and performs concerts in Fartein Valen, which is located in the Stavanger Concert Hall. This hall is renowned for its acoustics and is considered one of the best in the world. The SSO offers concerts and concert subscriptions, as well as learning resources for children and young people. They also participate in major anniversary projects involving children's choirs, which helps to engage younger generations in music. The SSO has received several awards, including nominations for Spellemann and Grammy, as well as Hedda prizes for its performances.
