The Freedom Monument is a sculpture that was unveiled on May 17, 1952 in Stavanger. The monument was erected in memory of 196 people from the city who lost their lives during World War II. The sculpture depicts a nuclear family consisting of a husband, wife and children, and has an inscription on the pedestal that reads: “They laid down their lives – for freedom and peace”.
The artist behind the work is Ottar Espeland, and the monument is made of bronze. The Freedom Monument serves not only as a memorial, but also as a gathering place, where a wreath-laying ceremony is held annually by the Armed Forces on May 17. Espeland is also known for his portrait statues, which contributes to his recognition in the field of sculpture.
