The Norwegian Railway Inspectorate is a supervisory authority responsible for the safety and regulation of trains, trams, metros, cable cars and amusement rides in Norway. The office works on the development and implementation of regulations, as well as conducting hearings related to the railway and cable car sectors. An important part of their tasks is to process applications for permits and reports of adverse incidents.

In addition to supervision and regulatory work, the Norwegian Railway Inspectorate provides guidance and risk assessments for railway operators. The office has a strong focus on safe operation and accident prevention, which includes requirements for annual independent technical inspections. They also carry out market surveillance and collect statistics for railways, as well as work on universal design and community-based measures.
