How much cash can I take into or out of Norway without declaring it?
The NOK 25,000 limit, the form and the penalty.
Short answer
You can carry up to NOK 25,000 in cash into or out of Norway without declaring it. Cash or other means of payment worth more than that must be declared to Norwegian Customs. You may carry more, and there is no tax on the amount. If you do not declare it, the penalty is 20 per cent of the whole sum.
Why
- Tolletaten's rule covers Norwegian and foreign notes, coins and other means of payment such as gift cards, both when you arrive and when you leave.
- The penalty is 20 per cent of the entire amount, so failing to report NOK 26,000 costs NOK 5,200.
- If Tolletaten suspects that the money is linked to crime, it reports the case to the police and holds the entire amount until the investigation is complete.
Details
You declare the money on Tolletaten's form "Declaration of cash and cash equivalents" and hand in two copies. When you arrive in Norway, go through the red channel and hand the form in there. When you leave, hand it in at the nearest customs office, for example at the airport before departure. Bank transfers abroad do not need to be reported to Tolletaten, because banks and payment companies report them to the Currency Register.
Tip
Download the form before the trip and fill in two copies, so you can hand it in straight away in the red channel or at the customs office.
What may differ
Other countries have their own limits. When you travel between Norway and an EU country, you also cross the EU's external border, where travellers carrying EUR 10,000 or more in cash must declare it.
Common misconception
The EU limit of EUR 10,000 also applies in Norway.
What actually happens
Norway is not in the EU and has its own rule: you must declare cash worth more than NOK 25,000 when you enter or leave Norway.
