How do you find a certified electrician in Norway?
DSB's register, the declaration of conformity and what to agree on.
Short answer
To find a certified electrician in Norway, choose a company listed in DSB's Register of Electrical Enterprises, because companies may not do electrical work without being registered. DSB says it is your duty to check that the company you hire is in the register. The company must document the work with a declaration of conformity (samsvarserklæring).
Why
- The register lists all businesses allowed to do electrical work in Norway, including sole proprietorships, and shows which types of electrical work each one may carry out.
- In other people's homes a registered electrical company must carry out and document the job, according to DSB.
- DSB says all work on the electrical installation must be documented with a declaration of conformity, which only a registered company can issue.
Details
The register lists the name of the company, for example Hansen Elektro AS, together with contact details. Forbrukerrådet also advises checking the company in the Central Coordinating Register (Enhetsregisteret), asking about a master craftsman's certificate (mesterbrev) and references, and writing a contract. If you get a price estimate, the final price must not exceed it by more than 15 percent unless something else was expressly agreed.
Tip
Search the register by the company name on the quote, not by the electrician's own name, and ask for the declaration of conformity when the job is finished.
What may differ
DSB has separate rules for trained electricians: one with three years of relevant experience may work on the installation in their own permanent home and own cabin, but not in other people's homes.
Common misconception
A friend who is an electrician can do the job in your home privately.
What actually happens
In other people's homes a registered electrical company must take on, carry out and document the job, so DSB advises against asking a friend to do it privately.
