Where can you get furniture reupholstered in Norway?
Who does the work, how to find a master upholsterer and what to agree on.
Short answer
In Norway, furniture is reupholstered by upholsterers (møbeltapetserere), most of whom run their own workshop, and you can find certified masters in Mesterbrevnemnda's public register. Upholstery is one of more than 70 trades with a master certificate. Forbrukerrådet advises a written contract with the price agreed before the work starts.
Why
- According to utdanning.no, upholsterers repair and restore old upholstered furniture and cover new furniture in fabric, and most of them are self-employed with their own workshop.
- Mesterbrevnemnda lists upholstery (møbeltapetsererfaget) among the furniture and woodwork trades, and its register holds around 14,500 masters in more than 70 trades.
- Forbrukerrådet says that with a price estimate, the final price must not exceed it by more than 15 percent unless something else has been expressly agreed.
Details
Some upholsterers work in smaller craft businesses or for theatres. Before you choose, Forbrukerrådet advises checking the firm in the Central Coordinating Register (Enhetsregisteret), asking about a master craftsman's certificate (mesterbrev) and checking references from the firms that give you offers.
Tip
Ask for a fixed price if you can: Forbrukerrådet says the final invoice should then not exceed the agreed amount. Avoid paying in cash, since it is hard to document.
