How do you find a locksmith if you are locked out in Norway?
Finding a certified locksmith, who pays and what to agree on.
Short answer
If you are locked out in Norway, you call a locksmith (låsesmed) yourself, and you can find certified locksmiths in Mesterbrevnemnda's public register, since locksmithing is a master trade. Oslo municipality, for example, tells tenants in municipal flats who have lost all their keys to order and pay for a locksmith themselves.
Why
- Mesterbrevnemnda lists locksmithing (låsesmedfaget) among the workshop craft trades with a master certificate.
- Mesterbrevnemnda's public register of approved master craftsmen holds around 14,500 masters in more than 70 trades.
- In Oslo's municipal housing a new key to the building entrance costs NOK 400 and an electronic key fob NOK 200, while residents of a housing cooperative or condominium order new keys from the cooperative.
Details
Ask for the price before the locksmith starts. If no price has been agreed, Forbrukerrådet says you pay the usual price for that kind of work (gjengs pris), and a price estimate must not be exceeded by more than 15 percent unless something else was expressly agreed. In Oslo's municipal housing you must show valid ID to collect a new key.
Tip
Have a spare key made and leave it with someone you trust. Mister Minit, for example, says it can copy most keys.
What may differ
If you rent from a private landlord, check your contract or ask the landlord who orders and pays for a locksmith.
