How do you find a plumber in Norway, and what does it cost?
Hourly rates, offers, contracts and how to check a plumber.
Short answer
Plumbers in Norway often charge between NOK 890 and NOK 1,245 an hour, according to the tradesperson marketplace Mittanbud, and Forbrukerrådet advises comparing offers from several plumbers. Sign a written contract and do not pay in cash. Under the Craftsman Services Act, an agreed price estimate may not be exceeded by more than 15 percent.
Why
- Mittanbud says plumbers often charge hourly rates between NOK 890 and NOK 1,245; the figure comes from the marketplace itself, not from official statistics.
- Forbrukerrådet explains that under the Craftsman Services Act (håndverkertjenesteloven) a price estimate may not be exceeded significantly, and never by more than 15 percent.
- Mesterbrevnemnda's register lists about 14,500 master craftsmen in more than 70 trades and can be searched for masters and master firms.
Details
Describe the job precisely, ask several plumbers for offers and check that the company is registered in Enhetsregisteret. Forbrukerrådet also suggests asking whether the plumber has a mesterbrev. If you agree a fixed price, the final invoice should not be higher, and if no price is agreed, the usual market price (gjengs pris) applies.
Tip
Pay by bank transfer, not in cash: Forbrukerrådet warns that if you pay more than NOK 10,000 in cash, you can be held jointly responsible.
What may differ
Urgent jobs cost more: Rørlegger Sentralen in Oslo says evening and weekend jobs have higher rates, and Rørleggervakta bills its travel time to and from the customer.
Common misconception
A price estimate is only a guess, so the plumber can bill whatever the job ends up costing.
What actually happens
Under the Craftsman Services Act, an estimate may not be exceeded significantly, and never by more than 15 percent.
