Where are the dog parks in Oslo?
The municipal dog parks in Oslo and the lead rules around them.
Short answer
Oslo kommune runs ten dog parks where dogs may run off the lead, including Hundejordet in Frognerparken, Styggedalen at Bogstad and Ola Narr at Tøyen. They are the exception to the lead rule that applies in the rest of Oslo, both in the city and in Marka, from 1 April to 20 August.
Why
- The national leash period runs from 1 April to 20 August, and a dog walking freely at heel does not meet the rule.
- Oslo kommune says the lead rule covers both Marka and the city, including parks and the islands in the fjord, with the municipal dog parks as the exception.
- Some areas in Oslo require a lead all year under their protection rules, for example Østensjøvannet and Triungsvann nature reserves.
Details
Besides the three parks above, the municipal list includes Grefsenkollveien, the area west of Isdammen at Årvoll, Nuggerud car park at Ellingsrud, Lille Wembley at Haugerud, Skraperudtjern, Hallagerjordet at Ljan and Jomfrubråtveien at Ekeberg. In winters with special snow and cold conditions, the municipality can adopt an extra leash period to protect wildlife. Maridalen Hundepark is a private dog park in Maridalen with three fenced fields, open daily 06:00–23:00, and you must book a time online in advance.
Tip
Use the map of all off-lead areas on Oslo kommune's page to find the park nearest to you, since the list itself gives only names and neighbourhoods.
What may differ
The Botanical Garden at Tøyen has banned dogs since 17 March 2025, but guide dogs and service dogs are allowed.
