Can you take your dog hiking and stay at DNT cabins?
Dogs on hikes, dog rooms at DNT cabins and the lead rules.
Short answer
You can hike with your dog in Norway and stay at most DNT cabins, where the dog sleeps in a private room with you or in a separate dog room. Dogs must be on a lead from 1 April to 20 August. At Aursjøhytta, for example, dogs may only stay in the two dog rooms because of guests with allergies.
Why
- Visit Norway says most DNT cabins allow dogs, either in private rooms or in a special room outside.
- DNT's list of dog-friendly cabins on UT.no says facilities vary: some cabins use a separate small hut (sikringsbu), while others have rooms where you can stay with your dog.
- The national leash period runs from 1 April to 20 August, and DNT's list reminds you to keep control of your dog when you meet grazing animals.
Details
Aursjøhytta, run by Kristiansund og Nordmøre Turistforening, has two dog rooms with access from the back of the cabin, and the dog room can be booked. Dogs may not stay indoors anywhere else in the cabin. Each cabin page on UT.no shows whether the cabin is suitable for dogs.
Tip
Open the list Hundevennlige DNT-hytter on UT.no when you plan the route, and book the dog room in advance where the cabin allows it.
What may differ
Many municipalities have local rules that extend the leash period, so check the rules for the area where you hike.
