Can you take a dog on ferries and on Hurtigruten?

Rules and prices for dogs on ferries and coastal ships.

Short answer

Yes, dogs are usually allowed on Norwegian ferries, and Hurtigruten takes pets on port-to-port trips but not on its Coastal or Signature voyages. On Hurtigruten a pet stays in a pet cabin at 200 NOK per pet per night, or in the car on the car deck at no extra cost. Pets may not go into its restaurants, lounges or outdoor decks.

Why

  1. Hurtigruten welcomes pets on port-to-port stretches as long as the owner travels with them, but not on Coastal or Signature sailings, except guide dogs.
  2. On Color Line, pets must stay in the car or in a crate in a designated place for the whole crossing and may not enter cabins or common areas.
  3. Go Nordic Cruiseline, the former DFDS ferry between Oslo and Copenhagen, keeps pets in pet-friendly cabins and charges DKK 425 per pet per journey.

Details

Visit Norway says dogs are usually allowed on boats and ferries, which often have designated rooms or cages. On Color Line between Kiel and Oslo a pet costs 58 euros each way in the car and 68 euros in a crate; between Hirtshals and Norway a dog costs 9 euros in the car and 15 euros in a crate, and between Strömstad and Sandefjord dogs travel free. On Go Nordic Cruiseline pets may not be left in vehicles during the crossing.

Tip

Book a pet cabin or kennel place when you book the trip, since spaces are limited, and bring the pet's travel documents on routes to Denmark, Germany and Sweden.

What may differ

Guide dogs are treated differently: Hurtigruten also accepts them on Coastal and Signature sailings. On Hurtigruten, a fee of 1500 NOK may apply if a pet travels undeclared without a pet cabin booking.
