Can you take a dog on the train in Norway?
Tickets, lead rules and where dogs may not go on Vy and SJ trains.
Short answer
Dogs may travel on Vy and SJ trains in Norway, and a dog taller than 40 cm at the shoulder needs a ticket at half the adult fare. Smaller pets travel free. Vy requires dogs to be on a lead, pets must lie on the floor, and they are not allowed in sleeper compartments.
Why
- Vy lets you book a seat or ticket for one pet per traveller, and on local and regional trains without seat reservation you can bring two small pets.
- Vy does not allow pets in Sove, Plus, the café, family carriages or animal-free zones, and SJ keeps them out of sleeping compartments, Premium, family and animal-free carriages.
- Guide dogs and approved service dogs on duty travel free on both Vy and SJ.
Details
On SJ trains you add Small Pet or Large dog to the ticket when you buy it, and one large-dog ticket covers either that dog or two small pets. On the Bergen Line, Vy has only a few pet spaces per departure in marked areas, and the train staff decide whether there is room for more. Dogs travel free on Ruter's public transport in the Oslo area, but for trains Ruter refers to Vy.
Tip
On long trips, bring a non-slip blanket for the dog to lie on, as Vy recommends.
What may differ
If you travel to or from Sweden, the dog needs a microchip, a pet passport and a documented treatment against fox tapeworm, even on a day trip, and all the health requirements must be met again when the dog comes back to Norway. If a rail replacement bus is used, Vy cannot guarantee room for your pet.
