How much does it cost to move to Norway with a pet?
Customs rules, airline fees and ferry prices for pets.
Short answer
Moving with a pet costs mainly transport and vet fees, because Norway charges no customs duty or VAT on your own pet after at least a year abroad. On the airline Norwegian, a pet in the cabin costs 55–75 euros each way when booked online. Color Line charges 58 euros each way for a pet in the car between Kiel and Oslo.
Why
- Tolletaten says you can bring your pet without customs duty or VAT when moving to Norway, if you have lived abroad for at least a year and have owned the pet.
- Norwegian charges 150–180 euros online and 170–200 euros at the airport per animal each way for a pet in the cargo hold.
- Go Nordic Cruiseline, which sails between Copenhagen and Oslo, charges DKK 425 per pet per journey, and the pet must have a pet-friendly cabin.
Details
In the cabin, Norwegian allows pet and carrier up to 8 kg in total and accepts up to two pets in the cabin per flight. On Color Line between Hirtshals and Norway a dog costs 9 euros in the car and 15 euros in a crate each way, while dogs travel free between Strömstad and Sandefjord. If the pet does not meet the rules at the border, Mattilsynet decides what happens and the owner pays any costs. Vet costs for microchip, vaccination, tests and certificates come on top, so ask your vet for a price.
Tip
Book the pet's place early: Norwegian has only a certain number of animal spaces on each flight, and you can add a pet to an existing booking only if there is space.
What may differ
The duty and VAT exemption does not apply to animals in a business that are moved to Norway. Norwegian takes pets on flights within Schengen or the EU and, dogs only, to and from Svalbard.
