When is the best time to hike in Norway?
When the snow melts, when cabins and popular trails open, and what changes in spring and autumn.
Short answer
Summer, from June to August, is the main season for hiking in the Norwegian mountains, as most of the snow has melted by then. DNT's staffed cabins are open from late June to mid-September, and Trolltunga's season for hiking without a guide runs from 1 June to 30 September. Winter can set in as early as October.
Why
- Visit Norway says that in summer most of the snow in the mountains has melted away, which makes it prime time for hiking, cycling and camping.
- DNT says most of its staffed cabins are open from late June to mid-September, and in winter from the Friday before Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.
- Trolltunga AS, which runs the official Trolltunga website, recommends a guided hike from October to May, as the path is often covered with snow until June.
Details
Autumn hiking is popular too: many Norwegians head to the mountains during the autumn break in October, although autumn can give way to winter as early as October, and rain sometimes turns to snow in the mountains in early November. Above the Arctic Circle true spring may not come until late May or early June, so the hiking season starts later in the north. From late June to early August the nights never get really dark anywhere in Norway, which leaves plenty of daylight for long hikes.
Tip
Bring waterproof and windproof clothing even on summer hikes, and check the forecast and the Norwegian Mountain Code before you set off.
What may differ
In Northern Norway the snow-free season starts later. Winter hiking in the mountains is possible, but Visit Norway says it is more challenging and requires proper preparation.
