Short answer

The best time for Svalbard is March to mid-May for snow activities in daylight, or mid-May to September for midnight sun and boat trips. From October to February the northern lights winter brings darkness, with polar night from 11 November to 30 January, according to Visit Svalbard.

Why

  1. Visit Svalbard says dog sledding and snowmobile trips are especially popular in the sunny winter from March to mid-May.
  2. The midnight sun lasts from 20 April to 23 August, and in summer walruses, seals and whales move into the fjords, according to Visit Svalbard.
  3. Svalbard Airport's 1991–2020 normals range from −12.0 °C in March, the coldest month, to 7.0 °C in July.

Details

Visit Svalbard gives average summer temperatures of 3–7 °C and winter temperatures from −11 °C down to around −30 °C, and notes that strong wind makes it feel colder. During the polar night the sun stays at least 6 degrees below the horizon all day, and with luck you can see the northern lights even at midday. Polar bears live on Svalbard, so Visit Svalbard strongly recommends organised trips with a local guide, and you must keep at least 300 metres away from them.

Tip

If you want winter activities with daylight, choose the sunny winter from March, but expect cold at the start of the season and pack windproof outer layers over several layers of wool or fleece.

Common misconception

Svalbard is nothing but rock, snow and ice.

What actually happens

Visit Svalbard says this is only partly true, and only for part of the year: in summer walruses, seals and whales move into the fjords, and visitors hike and paddle under the midnight sun.
