When is Norway least crowded with tourists?
Guest nights month by month, the summer peak and the quiet months.
Short answer
Norway has the fewest tourists from November to April, when Statistics Norway records far fewer guest nights than in July, the busiest month. In 2025, January had 2.0 million guest nights and July 7.4 million. Foreign guests were fewest in November. May, September and October are quieter than summer but busier than winter.
Why
- Statistics Norway counted 7.38 million guest nights in July 2025 and 2.00 million in January 2025, the lowest month of the year.
- Foreign guests spent 496,868 nights in Norway in November 2025, the lowest month, against 2,870,414 in July.
- Norwegians travel most in July too: about 4.5 million of the 7.38 million guest nights in July 2025 were by guests living in Norway.
Details
The shoulder months had 2.6–3.4 million guest nights in 2025: 3.3 million in May, 3.4 million in September and 2.6 million in October. Visit Norway calls summer the high season and says spring brings far fewer visitors. It also promotes autumn travel for more space and fewer queues, and winter for the fjords and Lofoten without the crowds.
Tip
For few crowds and long days, consider late May or September; for the quietest trip overall, choose November or January.
What may differ
Quiet nationwide does not mean empty everywhere: foreign guest nights in 2025 were about 766,000 in February and 782,000 in March, against 497,000 in November, so winter destinations can be busier than the national low suggests.
