Does it rain a lot in Norway, and is there a rainy season?
How much it rains in different parts of Norway, the wettest months and rainy days per year.
Short answer
Norway has no real rainy season, but it rains a lot on the west coast, where autumn and early winter are the wettest time of year. Bergen's 1991–2020 normal is 2,495 mm a year, about three times as much as Oslo, where the monthly normals add up to 837 mm. In Oslo the wettest month is August.
Why
- Most precipitation in western Norway comes with fronts and showers from the west, and high mountains shield inland areas from the sea (Store norske leksikon).
- Bergen Municipality says it rains on average 200 days a year in the city.
- Inland Finnmark is dry: the 1991–2020 monthly normals for Karasjok add up to 417 mm a year.
Details
Bergen gets the most rain from September to December, with normals of 248–290 mm a month, and the least in May (109 mm). In Oslo, yr recorded 135 days with precipitation in 2023, 139 in 2024 and 114 in 2025. Eastern Norway is wettest in summer and early autumn, with Oslo normals of 80–103 mm a month from June to August, while March is driest at 41 mm.
