How many seasons does Norway have?
The four seasons, when they start and why they differ across the country.
Short answer
Norway has four seasons: spring is March to May, summer June to August, autumn September to November and winter December to February. The seasons arrive at different times across the country, and in the north and in the mountains winter lasts longer. In Northern Norway you can often have four seasons in one day.
Why
- Visit Norway describes March to May as spring, June to August as summer and September to November as autumn.
- Spring usually reaches southern Norway in April, but above the Arctic Circle it may not come until late May or early June, according to Visit Norway.
- MET Norway's climate data measure the length of the summer season as the number of days with an average temperature above 10 °C.
Details
Summer usually gets a firm grip in late May or early June, and in the north you can see the midnight sun from mid-May to the end of July. Autumn can give way to winter as early as October, but more often in mid-to-late November. Spring reaches the coast and the lowlands long before it creeps up into the mountains.
Tip
Check the forecast for your exact destination: in May there can still be snow in the mountains and in the north while it is spring in the southern lowlands.
What may differ
Snowy winters are long in the north today: MET Norway says Tromsø has about 4.5 months with skiing conditions, but expects this to fall to about one month by the end of the century if high emissions continue.
