Short answer

July is the warmest month in most of Norway, and the coldest is January or February, depending on the place. In Yr's 1991–2020 normals, July averages 17.7 °C at Oslo Blindern and 15.6 °C in Bergen. The coldest normal is −2.3 °C in January in Oslo, and −14.6 °C in January in inland Karasjok.

Why

  1. Yr's normals show July as the warmest month in Oslo (17.7 °C), Bergen (15.6 °C) and Karasjok (13.6 °C).
  2. On the west coast, February is slightly colder than January: Bergen's normals are 2.3 °C in February and 2.6 °C in January.
  3. Visit Norway gives −6.8 °C as Norway's average winter temperature, but inland Karasjok has a January normal of −14.6 °C.

Details

These are monthly means over day and night, so afternoons are warmer than the figures suggest. Single years differ a lot: MET Norway reports that July 2025 was 2.8 °C above normal for the country and the third-warmest July on record. Oslo has the warmest summers of the three places, while Bergen has the mildest winters.

Tip

For warm weather, plan your trip for July; for snow and cold, head inland rather than to the coast.

What may differ

Coast and inland differ a lot: in Bergen every monthly normal is above freezing, while in Karasjok the normal stays below zero from October to April.
